Natural gas or Liquid propane, gas distribution systems either comes from a gas pipe that a utility provides, or a gas tank, which is refilled, and located, on the property. Gas is distributed with high pressure, which is 2 lb per square inch and regulated down to ½ lb before it enters the home. The gas is distributed using 1 of 3 types of tubing, copper, black steel, or a corrugated stainless steel product in a yellow pollelethene cover.
There are three main makers of the covered product, Track pipe, Wardflex, and Gastite, all of which are similar in looks but require fittings that will only fit their pipe. Gas piping is sized in pipe diameter for volume. This is determined by adding the total BTU’s of all the gas appliances in your home by the farthest fixture from the meter this determines the size pipe needed to each fixture.
Adding additional fixtures without sizing could cause an explosion if standing pilots are present, as well as other factors. A flexible connector and gas valve are installed to any appliance that can be moved, and the appliances that are permanent are hard piped with a gas valve.
It is highly recommended that a licensed plumbing company do any repairs or additions to the gas distribution system. Natural gas in its raw form has no smell or color, the gas utility adds a distinctive smell to the gas in order to tell if leaks are present. If you smell this odor, turn off the gas to that appliance or main and call the gas company immediately. They will tag the fixture and shut off the main. It is your responsibility to call a licensed plumber.
Your home has a water delivery system that is either a branch system or a home run system. Branch systems are typically a single hot and cold pipe that has branches that deliver hat and cold water to each fixture. The home rum system delivers hat and cold water through a manifold and each fixture has it’s own dedicated pipe from the manifold, no fittings between the two.
The home run system is made of either Pex piping which developed in the last 15 years and is used mostly in log homes and modulars, but can be used in other applications, or a Pollybutelene pipe or “Quest” which has a distinctive gray color. There are three different types of installation of this Quest piping, the home run system that uses a “crimp ring over either a plastic or copper manifold to a barb fitting to the inside of the piping, or a branch system that has fittings or tee’s that are made of either copper barb or plastic barb that are attached with the copper crimp ring.
All three of these installations were banned in July of 1994, and subject to a class action suit levied against Dow and Shell oil. Neither accepted guilt for the products but funded $950 million toward repairs or replacement of the product. The class action suit was administered by CPRC, consumer plumbing recovery center in Plano Texas. The funds for the suit have run out, and defective piping is the responsibility of the homeowner.
Copper piping is the most widely used material, but has its “pit” falls as well. When coming in contact with another metal like ductwork or steel beams, there is reaction call electrolysis. This causes the weaker metal to weaken and eventually have pinhole leaks and a green patina around joints to form causing leaks. Unfortunately the leaks aren’t isolated to where the other metal touches, it travels like electricity, that’s why most electric wire is made of copper because of its conductivity. CPVC or “Flowgold” piping is installed In the same manor as copper, it is a plastic but unlike “Polly” or Quest piping, it is not vulnerable to the sanitizing agents added in potable water.
At James Vito, Inc. we replace all types of piping using either copper or CPVC piping. The cost of copper now makes CPVC an attractive alternative to the traditional copper installation.
If you live in a rural area or are far away from a city water distribution system, a well is the system for ground water delivery from the water table to your table. A six inch steel pipe is used to create a void to a point where water is found in the water table in your area. There are different depths. Need to acquire the water but all systems are alike. All have a screen in the pit to guard against harming the pump, which delivers the water and comes in different horse powers depending on the depth. A torque arrester keeps the pump from spinning in the pit while spacers keep the well pipe and wiring from rubbing against the sides for the well pipe.
The pipe is connected to the side of the well pipe with a fitting called a pit adapter and the pipe is buried and sent to the interior of the home and connected to a main shut off valve, a high-low pressure limit switch, boiler drain, tank tee and the connected to a bladder tank that ranges in size depending on the need.
Since the water is coming from the ground unfiltered, sediment minerals and various ranges of PH are present. The acidity of the water is tested and a filter and or neutralizer may be needed to correct the waters hardness. It is important to check the acidity as not to have your fixtures and copper piping to be “eaten up” by neglect. It is preferable to have CPVC piping as a water distribution system in this type of application.
We repair and replace all types of pumps, piping, wiring, pressure limit switches, bladder tanks, and filter as well as neutralizers.
Sump pumps can save your basement. A sump pump pumps water away from the house. Improper sump pump installation can lead to problems. A backup sump pump can provide protection in case of a power failure.
A sump is simply a pit or recessed area that collects a fluid. The fluid is then pumped from the pit. If there was gravity flow away from the area, there would be no need for the sump!
