I returned to do proper diagnosis on system due to the outdoor coil being completely frozen 3 days ago. Upon arrival system was still on AUX heat. I went to the outdoor unit and found completely defrosted. I cut the heat pump on and called for heat at the thermostat. This Lennox heat pump holds about 13lbs of R410a refrigerant. I put my gauges on and I let it run for about 30 minutes. On the low side I got a 85psi. On the high side it was reading 320psi. I checked coils and found clean. I checked indoor filter found clean There is a defrost board and sensor and the purpose of a defrost board is to prevent ice from building up on coils. When the coils get to a certain temperature the cycle reverses and goes into cooling mode. The outdoor fan cuts off off and extracting heat leading to coils defrosting than reverses back. I checked my return air temperature of 66 and a supply air temperature of 106. The problem is the defrost board, it never detected the ice build up. I will check for

OUTDOOR UNIT MAKING LOUD NOISE: I arrived to the client house and I went to the thermostat and turned the fan on and it ran. I called for heat and went to the air handler and checked the filter and found it has been replaced recently per client. I went to the outdoor unit and noticed the coil iced up completely. The outdoor unit kicked on and ran and the house was heating. The defrost board was flashing "ambient sensor problem" At this time I cannot perform any further diagnosis until the coil has completely defrost itself. I left the outdoor off and I let the Aux heat run. The self defrost should take about 24-48hrs. We will have to return to finish diagnosis. For now the client will only pay the $120 dispatch fee and we will need to contact him back once coil is defrosted.
